A close-up view of a Chinese Foo Dog statue guarding a sacred area from evil spirits. This photograph was taken by Jim Epler at 7:13 PM on 5/18/2007 in Tokyo, JPN at the Asakusa Sensoji Temple. It is cataloged under the terms travel, animals, art, objects and signs & symbols in this photography database.

This image was recorded on digital media using a Canon Digital Rebel xTi camera with a Canon 70-200mm f/4 L lens stopped to f 8 and exposed at a speed of 1/200 sec.

Photographer Comments: Foo Dogs are fabled creatures that are part dog and part lion. They protect sacred areas from evil spirits and guard the fortune ("foo") of the building they adorn.

Additionally, Jim thought of search words that someone might use to locate this picture including the terms gargoyle, chinese, temple, shrine, statue, dog and lion, so he included these on this page as a service to himself and others who would like to download this free photograph!
