A close-up view of the chipped horn of an Indian "Great One-horned" rhinoceros. The horn is made from keratin just like human fingernails. This photograph was taken by Jim Epler at 3:06 PM on 7/21/2007 in San Diego, CA at the San Diego Zoo. It is cataloged under the term animals in this photography database.

This image was recorded on digital media using a Canon Digital Rebel xTi camera with a Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L lens stopped to f 5 and exposed at a speed of 1/800 sec.

Photographer Comments: I find these creatures fascinating. They are the fourth-largest land animal on the planet and can actually run fairly fast for short periods of time. The rhino has poor eyesight but their sense of hearing and smelling is quite good.

Additionally, Jim thought of search words that someone might use to locate this picture including the terms Rhinocerotidae, horn, rhinocerous, zoo, rino, rhino, keratin, Great One-horned and leathery skin, so he included these on this page as a service to himself and others who would like to download this free photograph!
